125mm YES! Si! Ja!

3 years since I first saw a 125mm wheel, and over 2 years since I started skating on them... FIRS have finally announced that 125mm wheels will be allowed in ALL MARATHONS, including World Championships, Senior, Junior, Masters. Men and women.

In 2012 Powerslide/Matter started working on the 125 development process with prototypes and testing.  It took them a over year to get a reasonable prototoype working, and even longer to refine it to a production model. In September 2013 rumours started flying and sneak previews were seen of the new (then pink) wheels. Then in 2014 came the blue production version. And last year we even saw the first specialist indoor wheels in the U.S.

Hopefully this decision opens the door for other manufacturers to produce a 125mm wheel. (World Record Wheels?

Atom? Bont? MPC? X-Tech?)

125's are proven faster on the road, despite the wheels being not 100% optimally developed yet. Further development and competition between the wheel companies will mean better wheels, more stable wheels, more grip and possibly more roll. Which means going even faster in the future (if you can skillfully handle the wheel size).

It will give us greater choice and might even give us 125 rain wheels next year. This is a big positive move for the sport, and a very sensible decision from FIRS.
